G.E.M.S. began in 2006 as a collaborative effort between the American Association of University Women (AAUW) College Park Chapter and a diversity initiative at the University of Maryland, College Park. The program was first launched as a monthly STEM enrichment activity at Hyattsville Middle School with a simple but powerful goal: to inspire and encourage girls to pursue interests and opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Over the years, G.E.M.S. has grown into a thriving an enrichment program serving middle school students throughout Prince George’s County. What began as a single monthly activity evolved into a weekly program that provides hands-on STEM experiences, mentorship, academic support, and exposure to STEM careers.

A cornerstone of the program has been the dedication of college student mentors and tutors, who serve as role models and help students build confidence in their mathematical and scientific abilities. Through strong partnerships with the University of Maryland, community organizations, educators, families, and local leaders, G.E.M.S. has continued to expand its impact and create meaningful opportunities for young women to explore STEM fields.

Today, G.E.M.S. remains committed to empowering the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders by fostering curiosity, academic achievement, and a lifelong appreciation for STEM. Through its rich history and continued growth, the program has helped countless girls discover their potential and envision futures in STEM-related studies and careers.
